Your local street market – Le Marché des Enfants Rouges in the 3rd, north of the Marais

Le Marches des Enfants Rouges is hard to find, but worth searching for – a hidden gem located in the third arrondissement of Paris, it is an unique market filled with food from Morocco, Japan, Africa and Italy.

Open every day except Monday, you can stop by for a quick snack or take the time to sit and enjoy the flavours from around the world.
Even if you are not a foodie, the atmosphere and aromas will draw you in. Watch the food being prepared right before your eyes, a spectacle for both adults and children. You can also buy fresh fruit and vegetables, which could contribute to a fabulous meal if  you were cooking back at your Paris apartment.

The quaint Marché des Enfants Rouges would be your local market if you’re staying near République. You can take your purchases and stroll down the street to sit in the Square de Temple.

Your local street market – Marche d’Aligre on the border of the 11th and 12th

Combining the permanent Beauvau covered food market with food, antique/bric a brac and miscellaneous stalls in the surrounding streets, makes Marche d’Aligre one of the larger daily Parisian food and flea markets.

Open every day it trades frenetically until lunchtime when a small army of efficient city staff in their green uniforms and matching liveried trucks and carts swoop to restore order and remove mountains of rubbish generated by this busy market. The covered section opens again in the afternoon.

Marche d’Aligre would be your local market if you were staying in the area between rue de Charenton and rue Faubourg Saint Antoine on the border of the 11th and 12th arrondissements.

It is within 15 minutes walk of the eastern/Place des Vosges  end of the Marais, 10 minutes from Bastille and Gare de Lyon and the closest metro is Ledru Rollin (line).

After your browsing and shopping, take a coffee at Kafe Aujourd’hui on the northwestern corner of Place d’Aligre (free WIFI).

Sunday mornings are reputedly very lively at the market with many people enjoying a cheap glass of wine and some oysters or charcuterie at the infamous le Baron Rouge nearby.

Your Local Street Market – rue Daguerre in the 14th

I love two things in particular about the market on rue Daguerre. Firstly it is a daily market (except Sundays) and secondly, it really is for local residents and has no pretentions about targeting tourists.

Daguerre Maree sells every type of fresh fish but also great dishfuls of ready to heat paella. There are top quality cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables, bread and wine stalls/shops and unusually, interspersed with one or two excellent bar/brasseries of which my favourite is La Chope Daguerre.

A liitle aside for you is that the street takes it’s name from Louis Daguerre, the inventor of photogrphy – my photographer friend John Minihan stayed in one of our apartments (MONTPAR07) on the street last year and wrote about him and Samuel Beckett who lived in the neighbourhood.

Rue Daguerre would be your local market  if you were renting an apartment in the 14th, near or on avenue du General Leclerc, bld Saint Jacques and the residential area between avenue du Maine and Cimetiere du Montparnasse. The market is just across from  Denfert Rochereau station (RER B and Metro lines 4 and 6).

Your local street market – Place Monge in the 5th

wed 19th May 2010 - Place Monge market

wed 19th May 2010 - Place Contrescarpe

Today is wednesday so I knew the street market at Place Monge would be happening. I went there about 11am and bought some fruit for the next few days. If you are staying on the eastern side of the 5th this market, which operates on wednesdays, saturdays and sundays, is a good place to buy your fruit and veg. Afterwards you can take a coffee on  Place Contrescarpe or wander down rue Mouffetard to pick up some cheese and wine from the open shop stalls.
